Distributed Fibre Optic Strain / Temperature Sensors
Distributed Fibre Optic Sensing (DFOS) technology enables continuous measurement of strain and temperature by analyzing the backscattered light within an optical fibre. Based on Brillouin scattering principles, the system measures frequency shifts along the entire fibre length, providing accurate, real-time data at any point along the cable.
Brillouin-based DFOS systems are generally categorized into two main technologies: Brillouin Optical Time Domain Analysis (BOTDA/BOTDR) and Brillouin Optical Frequency Domain Analysis (BOFDA/BOFDR), each offering distinct advantages depending on project requirements.
At Smart Sensing Technology Sdn Bhd, we are equipped with advanced DFOS instrumentation from OZ Optics and fibrisTerre, including:
-
- BOTDA system for high-accuracy, dual-end access measurements
- Combined BOTDA/BOTDR system for flexible single-end and dual-end applications
- BOFDA/BOFDR system for high spatial resolution and detailed frequency-domain analysis
This comprehensive range of equipment allows us to deliver tailored monitoring solutions across a wide variety of geotechnical and structural applications.
BOTDA systems provide high signal-to-noise ratio and are ideal for applications requiring precise, long-distance measurements where access to both ends of the fibre is available.
BOTDR systems operate from a single end of the fibre, offering greater flexibility in installation and the ability to continue measurements even if the fibre is partially damaged.
BOFDA/BOFDR systems offer enhanced spatial resolution and measurement sensitivity, making them highly suitable for applications requiring detailed analysis over shorter to medium distances.
Our DFOS solutions are widely applied in geotechnical and structural health monitoring. With a single fibre optic cable installation, clients benefit from continuous distributed measurements, enabling early detection of strain, temperature changes, and potential structural issues while improving safety, performance, and long term asset management
